Despite Yusuf Pathan’s victory from Berhampore parliamentary constituency in Murshidabad on June 4, locals considered Humayun Kabir - the Bharatpur MLA from Trinamool Congress (TMC) - as their hero.

Although the opposition pointed fingers at him for polarising the voters, Humayun claimed that he would not hesitate in future to secure his party’s victory despite allegations against him.

“Owing to securing my party’s win, I will take any step. Because it is politics, not a child’s play. My aim is to strengthen my party and to gift the seat to
Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee,” Humayun said.

He further alleged that Adhir has been paid back in his own coins. “When I contested as an independent candidate, Adhir himself also played religious game.”

Prior to the 18th Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi propagated that the saffron party would itself exceed the 400-seat mark this year. However, they failed to cross the magic figure of 272 seats to form the government independently. The BJP now has to take support from its allies to form BJP-led NDA government.

Exit polls earlier predicted a nationwide landslide victory for BJP, including Bengal following the conclusion of the seventh and final phase of the elections on June 1. However, the TMC tsunami has belied mass expectation by sweeping BJP out of power from Bengal. With other giant leaders like BJP’s Dilip Ghosh and Muhammed Selim from the Left, the consecutive five-time Congress MP from Berhampore parliamentary constituency and the state Congress President Adhir Chowdhury has also faced defeat.

The Berhampore constituency, which was once considered as Adhir Chowdhury’s bastion, has now been refuted by Humayun, claiming that he has established this constituency as the Congress fortress in Murshidabad even before Adhir.

It is speculated that Humayun might be included in Mamata’s ministry. Responding to this speculation, he said that he will cater to any responsibility given to him by Mamata Banerjee. “It will be decided by our supreme authority Mamata Banerjee and I can cater to any responsibility that my leader asks me to do,” Humayun said.
